In essence Tokyo’s Tenniscoats celebrate all that makes song vital in our collective conscious. Matching emotive live performance against delicately psychedelic folk songs, the duo of Saya and Takashi Ueno (assisted by a plethora of floating members), create some of the most compelling music currently emanating from Japan.

“their most impressive statement so far, a convincing and beguiling melange of whispy folk, hazy psychedelia and murmuring electronics among which deft melodies blossom almost unnoticed” THE WIRE

Twenty-One Crows

“Twenty-One Crows are a captivating sigh of relief in the folk genre. This Brighton based band make brooding, brilliant modern classics”. The Great Escape Festival

”This is tough stuff, music that takes a while to come out from its reclusive shell, but Twenty One Crows are a mature and exciting new force in song writing”. Lastbroadcast

“Whatever Will Become Of Us…” is an undiscovered pleasure. This Four-track cd is only a teaser of better things to come”. Kingdom Magazine

Jacob’s Stories
“A British indie needs to snap up Jacob’s Stories and give Undisciplined Art the full release its unerring quality warrants, as if this album was put out by more of a houeshold name it would have already have been widely lauded as one of 2008’s very finest” Rock Midgets

“This impressive self-release album from Scottish-born, Brighton-based singer/songwriter Stuart Lee is deserving of a wider audience” Rock Sound

“Jacob’s Stories are profound, immense and beautiful” XYZ Magazine

“Beautifully crafted electronica” Bent Magazine

“Haunting in places, sparse and beautiful in others” Latest 7

Peepholes

“”Half finished bolts of tunes are discharged into the either with a lack of regard for conventions of traditional indie. To hold them in would be inconceivable”. 20jazzfunkgreats

“Stop Picking On Aretha Pudding” comes across like a grittier early Le Tigre, with angular guitar riffs broken out over a pounding drum machine and Kate Barrett left to her own devices on the vocals, producing nu-skool riot-grrl in excelsis” . Playlouder.com

“Coltish Korg abusers Peepholes are screaming, writhing on the dancefloor”. Plan B Magazine

“With their imaginative blend of up-beat frenetic pop and the wackiest sounds that emerged from the 80’s The Peepholes are not afraid of bucking current indie trends” One80news

Conrad Vingoe

“…he takes standard folk-like forms back to their essence so that the grains of the genre are important rather than the veneer of fashion. His touch is deft and almost feminine…almost imperceptible until you realise that the songs inhabit you…the melancholy of out of season loneliness…”
Americana-uk.com

“Vingoe’s super-power lies in his voice, which is glorious…Everything is in place” The Stool Pigeon

“Folk influenced pop carved out of wooden guitars and ivory keys, swelling melodies and a healthy vocal performance. This feels solid and ephemeral at once” The Brighton Source magazine

Nils Bech

“Combining classical music and well-crafted electronica…Nils Bech is a must see” Gscene Magazine

“With a baritone that sounds seductively schooled, a scrap book of musical styles and a real zeal for performance he’s the type of artist you stumble across at a festival, go “wtf?” and within 2 songs is your new favourite band”. Q:Pitch

“Bech is an integral part of the Norwegian art and music scene”. Amp Over Camp

Now solo and part member of MEMEME, Joanne’s debut album “The Lighter” (Textile Records) has been described as “a collection of intimate interior portraits, reminiscent in spots of Sybille Baier, Barbara Manning, even Hope Sandoval, but all performed with an addictive off-kilter grace that suspends time in a very special way.” Byron Coley .

Laish
Laish’s (Daniel Green) music has been described as a journey into lo-fi experimentalism with an eerie folk angle. Daniel’s music is tinged with melancholy and simplistic yet, effectively beautiful guitar arrangements,  drawing comparisons with British folk star Adem.

XYZ Magazine reviewed the night. Here’s what they had to say:

LIVE: Jacob’s Stories

24th March, Redroaster Café

JacobsstoriesXYZ’s Mo Mostowfi was expecting a few cups of Fair Trade coffee at St. James’s Redroaster but was instead greeted with the perfect setting for a dark musical feast: an album launch for Brighton-based Jacob’s Stories’ ‘Undisciplined Art’.

Support acts Twenty-one Crows and Birdengine were more than adequate. The former put on a good, if slightly neurotic performance, while the latter was beautifully dark, accomplished and assured. Birdengine is definitely one to watch out for.

But, tonight was all about Stuart Lee’s one-man-band Jacob’s Stories. From the moment Lee took his seat and started playing, the audience was hooked. Luscious melodies emanated from the various gadgets and keyboard and made his songs sound like melancholic masterpieces. Pretty much every song performed was captivating, with ‘Dear Mr Pearson’ and ‘God’s Rotweiller’ cemented as my personal highlights. Morons aside, I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t warm to this; all compositions were all executed brilliantly. Lee’s voice is truly captivating, and even the wraps between songs were entertaining, including an unusual and hilarious take on the Easter story. He could consider a career as a stand up comic, although I’m sure he’d disagree. The night was capped off with a beautiful rendition of The Dupree’s ‘You Belong To Me’, which was way better than the original.

Amongst the plethora of emo/metal/indie/hair bands which dominate Brighton’s music scene it is oh-so-refreshing to see a Brighton-based artist who can perform a set full of great songs. At the end of the show I wanted more and felt totally and truly moved by Lee’s music. I cannot think of a bad word to say about his performance or songs.

Jacob’s Stories are profound, immense and beautiful. If you do anything this year, you must check him out live and buy ‘Undisciplined Art’. Jacob’s Stories is a truly awesome musical experience.
