Frànçois
+ I Know I Have No Collar
+ Thirty Pounds of Bone

Date: Thursday 30th July 2009
Venue: The Basement, 24 Kensington Street, Brighton. BN1 4AJ
Time: 8.00pm-11.00pm
Tickets: By Donation (please note**all monies made on the door are divided between the artists, so please donate generously)
Over 18s only

Woodland Recordings and Type PR join forces with Bristol DIY label Stitch Stitch Records to showcase three of the independent lables’ wonderful artists.

François
François creates dream-like lofi pop music, and with his ever-changing collaborative backing band, The Atlas Mountains.
When Frànçois turned 20 he moved from his native France to Bristol, and quickly became part of the local music scene. His early solo work was dreamy lo-fi guitar pop, covered in drum machine and casiotone, From there he started scattering his music, band projects and collaborations across countries. He has since became a part time collaborator with Glaswegian pop band Camera Obscura, Bristolian experimenters Crescent, fellow stitch-stitch artist Ray Rumours, and Fence records new signee Rozi Plain.

http://www.myspace.com/francoisinbristol

I Know I have No Collar
Formed by Aaron Sewards and Tom Cops in 2003, I Know I Have No Collar started off as a mostly instrumental band, blending warm, playful keyboard melodies with Tom’s unique minimalist drumming. They worked with Frànçois on their first two records, I’m Missing and These Are Our Numbers, and played a lot of shows, mainly in Bristol. In 2005, Aaron moved to Canada for a year, and on his return, Nat (Bass), Steve (Clarinet) and Liam (Trombone) joined the lineup. Their new songs have expanded with the instrumentation, as has Aaron’s lyrical pallete. Their new CD, called A Little Slow, A Little Late, was recorded in bedrooms, kitchens, forests and cinemas around Bristol over the past year, and is released on stitch-stitch records.

http://www.myspace.com/iknowihavenocollar

Thirty Pounds of Bone

Here’s what some people had to say…

“Launching a new folk band can’t be too easy, but when their album is as bold and innovative as Thirty Pounds of Bone’s is, Folk aficionados should take notice. Proudly different, it has the side-ranging ambition and talent to appeal far more than only folk fans alone.” 4/5 – RECORD COLLECTOR Magazine

the debut album “THE HOMESICK CHILDREN OF MIGRANT MOTHERS” is out now across the UK, and online. Drift Records

“There is much to savour on this accomplished collection of plaintive laments, of which the title track and drone like uyeasound are exceptional.” Q Magazine.

“With its tattoo-style artwork depicting a storm-tossed sea, and snapshots of the band in archaic suits clutching pints of Guinness, it’s clear that this album isn’t going to fit the clichés of many of the recent ‘weird folk’ trends.” WORD magazine.

AXXONN
AXXONN takes all things beautiful – unicorns, showbags, stolen pens, J-Pop – and mashes it into shit, noise, dirt and distortion to come up with what can only be described as a mix between ‘Powernoise & Icecream’. Lulling listeners into a false sense of security at times, AXXONN’s aim is to transverse a number of genres, picking, choosing and using their favourite facets of black metal, doom metal, ambiance, electro and pop to create a cacophony of sound that feels like a rainbow sawing through your cranium (in a good way). AXXONN consists of solo artist and Room40 (Tenniscoats/Tujiko Noriko/Lawrence English & John Chantler) collaborator Tom Hall
http://www.tomhall.com.au http://www.myspace.com/digi_destroy
and Ian Rogers
http://www.myspace.com/ambrosechapeldestroysyou using a combination of electronics, laptops, drums and whatever other sound making devices they can get there hands on.

Power Up
Power Up are a boy/girl duo who create layers of shifting pulsing sound that twists from sparkling digital melodies to looping violin drones.
Influenced by artists like black dice, kid 606, four tet and godspeed! you black emperor, they perform semi-improvised sets using an ever changing collection of noise making toys.
Having taken a 6 month break from live performance to concentrate on remixes and other projects they return with a new set of skittering electronic beats, warped samples and vintage keyboard bleeps
Notable bands they have played with include Fuck Buttons, Keyboard Choir and Agaskodo Teliverek.

http://www.myspace.com/powerupup

The Vainglories
Gillian Alder has been writing scores for imaginary films as The Vainglories since 2003. Whilst living in Melbourne she played in melodic pop band Tempted and electronica duo Sweet Violentine, and contributed music to theatre, live improvised comedy and (actual) short film. In 2007 she moved to Brighton and has been working on creating a live performance set from The Vainglories’ back catalogue of extraterrestrial lullabies. The Vainglories’ music has featured on Australian radio stations SBS, PBS and Triple J, and was selected for a Melbourne Fringe Festival compilation album in 2004. In January 2008 The Vainglories played her debut live gig at Brighton’s Spirit of Gravity.

A review from The Vainglories debut gig:
The first live performance for The Vainglories was, as described on the tin: beautifully crafted electronica with dark undertones and scary undercurrents. Sat at a keyboard, laptop and FX Melbourne native Gillian Allder worked her songs by building up a background through the laptop into concisely structure songs with haunting piano leads over the top.

Type PR Presents…

Richard Walters + Jacob’s Stories + Lucy Kitt.

Date: Tuesday 14th July 2009
Venue: The Basement, 24 Kensington Street, Brighton. BN1 4AJ
Time: 8.00pm-11.00pm
Tickets: £5 adv/£6 on the door
Available from Resident 01273 606312 / Rounder Records 01273 325440
Over 18s only

Richard Walters, at 26 years old, has been performing solo for eleven years, and has been a voice-for-hire for many prominent musical projects. He has also appeared in several bands such as Ex Theremin (Shifty disco Records) frontman, released his first solo Ep in May 2004 on Beard Museum Records. ‘Umbrella songs’ recieved lovely reviews the world over and caught the attention of Nic Harcourt, presenter of cult Los Angeles radio show ‘Morning becomes electic’ on KCRW. Richard is also part of Monoband, the side project of Cranberries guitarist Noel Hogan, who released their debut Lp in May 2005 in Ireland. Richard has worked with genius producer Guy Sigsworth (Frou frou,Bjork, Lamb, Madonna) and Suede legend Bernard Butler, and David Kosten (Bat For Lashes, Faultline) came onboard as one of the producers of The Animal.

Richard Walters sings in such a beautifully gentle falsetto, without theatrics or histrionics, like a choirboy, when he really hits the high notes, that the subjects of his songs might come as a surprise. This is someone who sings about “losing the plot” or having a seizure, about the anxiety you feel at the start of a new affair, or about domestic abuse from the point of view of the abuser. He even covers a song by notorious manic depressive American musician Daniel Johnston, while one of his songs, a fragile confessional called ‘All At Sea’, was recently picked for the soundtrack of hit US forensic crime drama CSI: Miami. On the sleeve of his debut album of exquisitely minimal, hushed and haunting piano and guitar ballads adorned with the merest hint of strings, he is shown wearing headphones and tucking into a delicious plate of black cable as if the style of this record was zany electronica. It catches you off guard, because in its quiet majesty, the sound he makes is far removed from that world. The title of his debut LP, The Animal, is no less jarring because this music is more ethereal than bestial.

You may have seen Richard Walters singing his little pulsing heart out on tour with Dave Matthews, Grant Lee Phillips, Imogen Heap, Gemma Hayes or Supergrass.
Or maybe you heard ‘All at sea’ being played on an episode of CSI: Miami…or ‘Brittle bones’ soundtracking some love in Phillip Pullman’s ‘The Butterfly tattoo’ film.

“Finally, a male singer-songwriter that we actually enjoy!..Hushed and haunting”- The Guardian

Jacob’s Stories

Brighton-based singer-songwriter hovers on the musical faultline between electronica (think Radiohead on a good day) and the lyricism of Damien Rice. Sometimes somber, at other times brash, always goose-bump inspiring, Jacob’s Stories is characterised by Stuart’s unmistakably hunting voice, dipped in liquid velvet and cast against a haunting electronic backdrop. (180 news article). If anyone had the chance to see Jacob’s Stories supporting Tenniscoats recently, will already know he is one of Brighton’s best kept secrets.

http://www.myspace.com/jacobsstoriesband

Lucy Kitt

Lucy Kitt is a 22 year old singer songwriter, attracting attention for her individual and exciting fresh new sound. She began performing her solo acoustic material around Canterbury during her university years living in the city, building up a fanbase on the thriving local music scene. Before then she played guitar and wrote songs in an girl grunge band, after first picking up the guitar at the age of 16. Her self- penned, acoustic songs are all about the experiences, feelings, and people she has met so far along the way, and they continue to connect with audiences through their heartfelt and self- confessional lyrics. It is rare to see so many influences crammed into music, and lucy’s songs span the wide spectrum of folk, grunge and blues, with a distinct twist of her own individual style.

“How They Grow” EP

Label: Grand Independent Format: CD/Digital Download
Release Date: Out Now

A Dancing Beggar is the post rock project of 21-year-old Brighton based musician, James Simmons. Having played a mixture of drums and guitar in previous bands, a solo project seemed the next step in achieving other creative goals. Using just a laptop, a couple of guitars and a cheap microphone, everything is written, recorded, mixed and produced in his bedroom.

Influenced by seminal post-rock artists like Maps, Sigur Ros, Amusement Parks On Fire, and Eluvium, A Dancing Beggar began in summer 2007 after the purchase of some recording equipment and a number of songs were written, recorded and distributed across MySpace. It wasn’t until early 2008 that a collection of songs seemed to link together for a possible release. These were recorded and subsequently turned into the 5 tracks EP ‘How They Grow’. The editing and mixing was rushed and untidy (although The Stool Pigeon described it as a ‘post rock treat’). In late 2008 the songs were properly edited, parts were added, parts were taken away, songs were deleted and replaced with others and the entire EP was re-mixed, this time more carefully and patiently. On 23rd February 2009 Grand Independent released ‘How They Grow’, a 6 track EP on iTunes. ‘How They Grow’ takes elements of post-rock and shoegaze and has been compared to the sounds of Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Ulrich Schnauss and Sigur Ros.

As of March 2009, work has begun on new songs for A Dancing Beggar’s eagerly anticipated full-length album, which will be released later this year. These songs are more acoustic based, less distorted and euphoric with emphasis on a more organic sound.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
The EP ‘How They Grow’ is a post rock treat full of warmth and subtlety. ‘This Must Be The Start’ is almost unbearably beautiful with its delicate and melancholic guitars. Gorgeous.’ The Stool Pigeon

In essence Tokyo’s Tenniscoats celebrate all that makes song vital in our collective conscious. Matching emotive live performance against delicately psychedelic folk songs, the duo of Saya and Takashi Ueno (assisted by a plethora of floating members), create some of the most compelling music currently emanating from Japan.

“their most impressive statement so far, a convincing and beguiling melange of whispy folk, hazy psychedelia and murmuring electronics among which deft melodies blossom almost unnoticed” THE WIRE

“Spare Buttons and Bones” is Conrad Vingoe’s new album which was released digitally on Feb 14th 2009. Conrad decided to release it digitally in order to celebrate signing a new digital distribution deal with the French company, Believe Digital.

The album gathers material previously released on EP’s together with some unreleased tracks. The collection for the most part spans the last two years and combines Conrad’s favourite recordings from this period. Recorded in the various locations of London, Denmark and Brighton, the album has a number of different musicians and producers/engineers, a list of whom can be seen on Conrad’s official website: http://www.conradvingoe.co.uk

Listening back to this collection for the first time Conrad was surprised by how coherent it was, despite the recordings being separated by distances both geographically and in time. The songs seemed like postcards from certain periods of his life.

As the festive season approaches and the New Year creeps closer, Type PR would like to thank all the artists it has worked with and all who have played it’s PRESENTS… live shows, while a massive THANK YOU goes out to all of those who have supported independent music in 2008. In it’s first year as a fledling press and promotions entity, Type PR continues to grow from strength to strength and 2009 is shaping up to be even better. With live treats in store next year and exciting additions to it’s roster, Type PR continues it’s quest at becoming one of the best cutting edge promotions concerns in the UK.
